Sipping Sensations in Phnom Penh

Updated: Apr 15, 2019

The city of Phnom Penh was not always known for its large selection of food and beverage culture in relation to other cities in Western civilization, but these days the capital is booming with some of the best bars and restaurants in the country. Beautiful Cambodia decided to take to the streets and handpicked our favorite and the most exclusive bars in town.

Here is our list of the most marvellous bars in Phnom Penh:

Sora - Drink with the Stars

Situated on the rooftop of Rosewood Hotel, Sora offers sophistication in the sky. This is the highest bar in Phnom Penh, and the view of the city below is mesmerizing. The air is filled with chatter and intoxicating music. People of all ages and cultures mingle and bask in the enticing environment. The indoor bar and chill area offer a cigar lounge savvy, while the outside jungle rooftop fuses class, comfort and luxury to guarantee an experience of utter enjoyment. The menu leaves no taste bud untouched with a wide range of fresh cocktails, Japanese snacks, and a grand selection of whiskeys, wine, gin, and beers. Private booths can be reserved in the open-air bar for more exclusive evenings, and the area is spacious and relaxed with a blend of business, class, and flirtatious finesse.

Don’t miss out!

Happy Hour is from 7 pm until 9 pm every day, with $5 cocktails, wines, beer, and spirits. Thursday, between 8 pm and 10 pm, is Ladies Night, and for $10 there is free-flow prosecco on every lady's lips while a Latin Band brings sass and excitement to the evenings. There is also live Cuban music on Fridays.

Juniper Bar - Gin to our Tonic

As you walk up the stairs, old classic swing and jazz welcome you to a rooftop bar of old-world elegance. The ornate original gin concept reveals a world of vintage class, and with a beautiful selection of gins and fresh cocktails, the palette is never disappointed. The first tier of the bar shares its magical view of the Mekong river with its guests, while the upstairs terrace offers a cityscape view of lustrous lights. There are over 20 types of gin from all over the world including England, France, Germany, Cambodia, Belgium, Canada and the Mediterranean. The smell of wood-fired pizzas lingers on the nose, and the menu consists of culinary combinations, making each pizza impossible to resist. There are also yummy snacks like bruschetta, spanakopita and arancini available.

Don’t miss out!

Happy hour is from 5 pm to 7 pm with $3 cocktails and $3,50 IPA pints. During this time you’ll be greeted with a mix of people either passing through or who have just finished work, a good blend of vibrant variation. The sunset will sweep you off your feet while you enjoy the setting of the Mekong below, and the city lights starting to light up the night sky.

Chinese House - An Eclectic Integration

Enter one of the last remaining authentic Chinese Houses in Phnom Penh that will illuminate culinary, architectural and historical highlights. Chinese House offers an experience like no other in the city, being at the forefront of the comestible culture. With most of the original decor in place, it brings an antiquated atmosphere, with beautiful aesthetics, eclectic art and rustic chic. The menu is a coalescence of East meets West, bringing robust, bold flavors and combinations to the palate. Guests can divulge and lose themselves in varied vigorous options and wash it down with an incredible selection of cocktails, tasty wines and home-brewed beer. Everything is locally produced and served up with Western Technique.

Don't miss out!

Chinese House has a reputation for its Sunday Brunch as they continuously change themes and origin, never disappointing with the spread of carefully selected delicacies. No longer is Sunday Brunch a traditional affair but can be anything from a Mexican fiesta to a Greek eortasmós for $18 per person.

Bouchon - In Wine there’s a truth

One minute you are in Phnom Penh, the next you step into France. Bouchon Wine Bar and French Cuisine is a walk through traditional French elegance. The downstairs courtyard feels like a cafe in the streets of Paris, while the bar and restaurant inside offer a more vibrant, hidden cellar feel. The menu comes to life with hearty French dishes, as well as delicate and well-chosen signature plates. The most sensational part is the colossal selection of wines that are carefully handpicked and imported exclusively for Bouchon.

Don’t miss out!

Drink one, sip one free from Monday to Friday during Lady Hour from 6 pm to 8 pm and get swept away by $3 Martinis every Saturday during Martini Hour from 9 pm to 11 pm.

Elephant Bar - The Presidential Feel

There are many reasons to visit Elephant Bar located in Raffles Hotel Le Royal, but one of the most compelling ones is to dine where the King does. Instrumental, classical music sweeps through the open spaced bar, into the heavy set vintage layout and embraces each guest, invoking a feeling of royalty. The atmosphere is that of a venerable cigar lounge, with high-raised ceilings, and leather furniture. A special visit was made Jacqueline Kennedy during the Kennedy administration, and it is not hard to imagine her elegantly sitting at the bar sipping on her signature cocktail. There is still a cocktail glass with her lipstick on display for guests to marvel at. It has the largest gin collection in Phnom Penh with over 200 gins on the menu. It is possible to savor the Armagnac (Laubade 1929) which was bottled the same year as the Hotel first opened its doors.

Don't miss out!

Set in the Russian Market, Sundown Social Club welcomes its guests into a dynamic atmosphere of rum, greenery and toe-tapping. It overlooks the corrugated rooftops of the Russian Market, making for a uniquely Cambodian view, and the open-air bar allows guests to soak in the sun rays or enjoy a light breeze sweeping through the city. Service is smooth, with friendly staff, and the menu is simple yet dignified, offering vegan options on all items. This relaxed atmosphere is ideal for a nonchalant lunch or sensational sun-downers.

Le Moon is magnificently set on a rooftop in Riverside with a 280-degree view of the city lights. There is a vibrant blend of people of all ages who mix and mingle in this beautiful setting. They support local artists who paint big murals on the walls, adding to the idiosyncratic atmosphere. It is the only sky bar that stays open until 1 am and is one of the most popular places in Riverside to enjoy small bites and many cocktails.
